From the Airport

Six-lane expressways link Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to the city, all commercial centers of its suburbs in the Klang Valley and the rest of peninsular Malaysia. The average distance to the city is 75 kilometers.

The two best ways to reach the city center from the airport are. shuttle bus or airport limousine. Follow the directional signs from the Arrival concourse.

Airport Coach Sdn Bhd (Tel: +60-3 8787-3894) runs shuttle buses that leave at 30-minute intervals from 5:30am until 12:30am. Travel time is one hour to the business district and the same or less time to other points. The fare is RM25. Prior reservations are not required.

The Airport Limo (M) Sdn Bhd (Tel: +60-3 8787-1010) operates a 24-hour limousine service. Travel time to the business district is one hour and the same or less to other major points. The fare to the business district is RM91.20, and as little as RM69.20 to other points. Visitors who opt for the Premier Service can choose among the Proton Perdana, Mercedes Benz E220, and Multi-purpose Vehicles (MPVs). For the Budget Service, the Proton Wira 2.0 is used.

At the airport, purchase coupons at the Arrival concourse (Level 3) of the main terminal building. Elsewhere, if you require an airport taxi or limousine, call Free Phone 1-800-880-737 or 1-800-880-678. Pay the driver in cash and get a receipt. There are also return fares available, which are valid for six months.

Most major car rental companies operate counters at the Arrival concourse. Chauffeur-driven cars are available with prior reservation at hotels.

Express Rail Link (ERL) - KL city centre to Sepang airport in just 28 minutes

YOU are in Kuala Lumpur and need to get to the KLIA airport fast to catch a flight.

But it is rush hour and the road is clogged with slow-moving traffic.

Enter the promise of the Express Rail Link (ERL) - moving travellers from the central rail station, KL Sentral, to the airport within half an hour.

On arrival in Kuala Lumpur International Airport, at exit after your baggage claim please do visit the ERL counter for special rebated tickets for WARRiors.

One Way     USD9
Return         USD16

The KLIA express (ERL) takes only 28 minutes to the KL Sentral station. From there you could take a taxi to the hotel, which is about 4 KM away. Definitely this is a catch as the special fare offer is very cheap compared to the other modes of travel.

On your departure, you can check in your luggage at the KL City Air Terminal (IATA code XKL) at the KL Sentral station and collect your boarding pass for the flight.

The RM2.4 billion rail system linking the city to KLIA has started commercial operations on 17th April, 2002. It also links up to other railway systems at KL Sentral station.

Travelling at 160 kmh - the fastest speed for public transport in the country - the air-conditioned coaches will seat 156 people.

A one-way fare for the 57 km journey costs RM35, less than half the price of a taxi.

KLIA is located about 70 km from the city and travelling by car takes nearly an hour under normal traffic conditions.

The KLIA Ekspres train will operate at 15-minute intervals between 5 am and 1 am daily.

City Transport

Local means of transportation include taxi, bus, commuter train, and light rail transit (LRT). All except a few buses are air-conditioned. Opt for a cab or the LRT unless someone who knows can give specific directions.

Taxi flagfall rate is RM2 for the first two kilometers, and RM0.10 for every succeeding 200 meters. While many taxi drivers are honest, and rarely refuse to use the meter, there are unscrupulous ones who may demand a flat rate. If this happens, ask the taxi driver to stop, get out, note the license plate number and complain in writing to the Road Transport Department.

Taxis may also be booked through telephone (click on the link to Useful telephone numbers at the bottom of this page) but there is an additional charge of RM1 for the phone booking.

It is fairly easy to get a cab during the wee hours, especially from popular entertainment spots, but the fare is 50% more than the metered amount from midnight to 6am.

The overhead LRT is fast and ideal for avoiding traffic, but it has a limited number of stops. There are two LRT lines - STAR and PUTRA - which operate from 6 a.m. to midnight. The STAR line also recently launched an express coach service to KLIA from the Chan Sow Lin station. Airport buses leave the station every hour from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.. Travel time from the Chan Sow Lin station is 45 minutes and costs RM10 one-way.

If you want to rent a car and drive yourself, take note that cars are driven on the left-hand side of the road in Kuala Lumpur. There is virtually no free parking within the business district. Rates vary from RM2 per entry to RM5 per hour. Monthly rates for covered parking is RM100 to RM120. There are no weekly rates.

Rush hour in Kuala Lumpur is from 7-9 a.m. and from 5-7 p.m.
