The Land
Located
in the tropics, Malaysia straddles the South China Sea - Peninsula
Malaysia is at the tip of mainland Southeast Asia, while the states
of Sabah and Sarawak are on the island of Borneo. Throughout the
country you can enjoy beautiful beaches and idyllic islands, lovely
hill stations and the worlds oldest rainforests, with a diversity
of flora and fauna that is truly astounding.
The People
Malaysia
is truly multicultural, and one of its greatest resources is its
rich cultural diversity. Malays constitute around 60 percent of
the nations total population of over 21 million. The rest
of the population comprises of Chinese, Indians, Ibans, Kadazans,
and other races spread over the 13 states. Bahasa Malaysia is the
national language and English is widely spoken throughout the country.
Climate
Malaysia
has an equatorial climate with fairly uniform temperatures throughout
the year. Temperatures range from 32 C during the day to 22 C during
the night It can be slightly cooler in the hill country. Rainfall
is common throughout the year, averaging 200-250cm a year.
Light
weight or mixed-fibre clothing is normal with only woolens being
required for visits to the cooler highland areas.
Electricity
And Water
Most
parts of the country have electricity and a piped water supply.
Malaysia is a 240 volt 50 cycle system.
Kuala Lumpur
A mining outpost some 100 years ago, Kuala Lumpur or KL as it is
popularly known spans 243.6 sq. kilometres housing a population
of almost two million. Discovering KL is like travelling though
a time tunnel, in a city of delightful contrast with ultra modern
skyscrapers standing magnificently next to relics of the past.
Malaysia
Airlines which has approximately 3,000 flights weekly, will bring
you to this world of old and charm. Youll be amazed at our
new hub, the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) built from
scratch at a cost of RM8.9 billion fully operational since June
1998. It is able to handle up to 25 million passengers annually
and up to 60 million by year 2020.
Enjoy
the 50km ride from the airport to KL by Express Rail Link (ERL)
or take an airport limo if you prefer. The ERL is complemented by
high speed belt conveyors, allowing travellers to check-in their
luggage at KL Sentral, the rail hub of the city. City travelling
is made easy with LRTs, taxis or buses. Some of you might even prefer
to walk.
If
youre lost, ask around! Malaysians are friendly people and
they would be more than willing to help you get around. Bahasa Malaysia
is the national language but English is widely spoken amongst Malaysians.
Check-in
at your preferred WARR hotel and then take the trail of fascinating
discovery.
The
trail will lead you to loads of shopping malls, bazaars, local and
western eateries, boutiques and more. Drop by at Bintang Walk, Petaling
Street (Malaysias Chinatown), Central Market, Lot 10, Mid
Valley Megamall (the biggest shopping mall in Asia) and a whole
lot more. Shopping in Malaysia is a paradise. Get your favourite
items for your family and friends! Computer accessories, electronic
gadgets, appliances, watches, sporting apparels, local handicrafts
and even designer items. Care to eat, choose from Hard Rock Café,
McDonalds, Burger King, Modestos or even experience
our famous open-air stalls. You wouldnt believe the choice
we have on food.
Be
adventurous, try our local dishes and cuisine ranging from Malay,
Indian and Chinese.
Fancy
lunch somewhere high up? Try the KL Tower, a revolving restaurant
421 metres (1,380 ft) above ground. It is also the third highest
telecommunications tower in the world.
Witness
the breathtaking sight of the Petronas Twin Towers, built by Petronas,
the national petroleum company, is the tallest building in the world
at 88 stories high. The identical towers are linked midway up by
a skywalk. The building comprise mainly of offices and also a mega
shopping complex known as Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) easily
accessible from your hotel.
WARRiors
will start and finish the Road Race here back-dropped by the Sultan
Abdul Samad building, adjacent to the Independence Square (Dataran
Merdeka) on October 6, 2002. Race day will most likely be dry with
temperatures varying from 21-32 degrees Celsius. The WARR 2002 Host
Committee assures you that the race course will be as fascinating
as the city itself.
For
those who wish to extend their stay in Malaysia, why not visit the
other states such as Penang, Terengganu, Sabah or Sarawak. You will
be equally impressed at the lush greenery, sandy white beaches and
the friendly people of this beautiful country. If you wish to bet
on lady luck , visit Genting Highlands, a cool mountain resort located
2,000 metres above sea level. When youre here, dont
miss the fascinating ride of the Genting Skyway from
Awana to Genting Resort, reputed to be one of the longest cable
car ride in the world.
